The Snow Dragon to be welcomed in Reykjavik during the Culture Night
With the midnight sun which still illuminates the city for almost 24h, people from all over the world fill the streets of Reykjavik to celebrate Icelandic unique culture.
Both, young and old, children and adults participate in many and various cultural events in the capital city of Iceland.
The Reykjavik Culture Night is an annual event which has been organized in the city since 1996. With almost 20 years of a tradition, it has greatly become an essential part of Icelandic cultural life.
Every year, the organizers offer broad spectrum of activities, ranging from guided tours, traditional shows and exhibitions, musical and poetry performances to more unusual happenings.
Most of cultural institutes in and around the city remain open from early Saturday morning until Sunday´s mid day. Those are to include museums, galleries, ateliers, churches, coffee houses and restaurants.
This year´s event, for the first time will mark the opening of the Reykjavik Festival Season 2012 – 2013. The samples of next year´s festival program will be reviled during the cultural night. Additionally, late Saturday night, the annual Reykjavik Jazz Festival will be the first to start.
However, this year´s Reykjavik Culture Night is significantly important for the Arctic science. The research icebreaker from the Polar Research Institute of China will arrive to the port of Reykjavik today´s afternoon to take part in the annual event.
The arriving ceremony and press briefing on board Xuelong – the Snow Dragon will take place as soon as the vessel anchorage in the harbor. It will be open for external visitors on Saturday, 18th of August, from 11.00 – 16.00. The same day, around 20.00 the vessel will leave the Icelandic capital city to sail north to Akureyri, where it stays for one day, Monday, the 20th of August.
