Life on board Xuelong in the Northern Sea Route

(Photo: Egill Nielsson)The pace of life on board Xuelong significantly changed after scientific investigations were put on hold once the vessel entered the Northern Sea Route (NSR).

Having worked hard down to the last investigation in the Chukchi Sea, before entering the NSR, most of the CHINARE5´s scientists got a much welcomed rest.

The evening, after the teams arrived in the NRS, the celebratory dinner was served on board the Snow Dragon. Later that evening, the on board bar was officially opened for researchers to enjoy and relax after their hard work.

Another worthwhile pastime during the ship´s voyage through the NSR was to include CHINARE5 lecture series, dubbed as the crews version of the University of the Arctic. Those included daily talks on themes such as China´s Polar research and the Arctic Shipping.

The lecture series are meant to raise interdisciplinary awareness on the Arctic issues among the CHINARE5´s crew and other participants and learn about a wide range of different Arctic issues from field experts.
